Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick will be looking to one of his most experienced and versatile players, João Cancelo, as the Blaugrana prepare to face Albacete in the Copa del Rey clash on February 3, 2026.
With the Copa del Rey often serving as a stage for tactical rotation and individual expression, this fixture presents Cancelo with the perfect opportunity to remind fans and critics alike of his immense quality and importance to Flick’s system.
A Game Tailor-Made for Cancelo
Against a lower-division opponent like Albacete, Barcelona are expected to dominate possession, push high up the pitch, and apply relentless pressure. This style of play plays directly into João Cancelo’s strengths.
Unlike a traditional full-back, Cancelo thrives when given freedom:
To drift into midfield
To overload the flanks
To deliver decisive final balls
To shoot from range when space opens up
Hansi Flick’s system values fluidity, intelligence, and technical bravery, qualities Cancelo has built his career on. This Copa del Rey tie offers the Portuguese international the platform to operate almost as a hybrid full-back and playmaker, stretching Albacete’s defensive structure.
Hansi Flick’s Trust in Experience
While Flick has shown great faith in Barcelona’s young core this season, cup competitions often demand composure and leadership. Cancelo brings exactly that.
With Flick expected to rotate his squad, Cancelo is widely tipped to start the match, possibly at right-back or left-back, depending on tactical needs. His experience at the highest level — Champions League nights, title races, and knockout football — makes him a valuable presence in a potentially tricky away fixture.
Flick understands that Copa del Rey games can become uncomfortable if not controlled early. Cancelo’s ability to dictate tempo from deep areas could be crucial in settling Barcelona into the match.
A Chance to Reassert His Role
This fixture is also personal for Cancelo. While his talent is unquestionable, consistency and defensive balance have sometimes been debated. A commanding performance against Albacete would:
Reinforce Flick’s trust in him
Strengthen his claim for more regular starts
Silence doubts about his tactical discipline
Against an opponent likely to sit deep, Cancelo’s creativity could be the difference between a frustrating evening and a comfortable victory.
What Barcelona Fans Should Watch For
Barça fans tuning in should keep an eye on:
Cancelo’s positioning in buildup play
His chemistry with the right winger and midfielders
Overlapping and inverted runs
Early crosses and cut-backs into the box
Long-range efforts when Albacete defend deep
If Cancelo is allowed space, he has the quality to control the rhythm of the game and deliver decisive moments.
Final Thoughts
As Barcelona chase silverware under Hansi Flick, the Copa del Rey remains a realistic and important objective. The clash against Albacete is not just another cup tie — it’s a chance for João Cancelo to step into the spotlight.
With Flick’s tactical framework and Cancelo’s attacking instincts, all signs point toward a night where the Portuguese star could truly shine in Blaugrana colors.
For Barcelona fans, this is a match worth watching closely.
