The Paris Saint-Germain forward stated that he will have to consider other options after the world cup in Qatar considering his age.
Messi will be 35 when the competition kicks of later this year.
“I’m thinking about what’s coming now, in Ecuador,” said Messi after scoring in Argentina‘s 3-0 win over Venezuela.
“After the World Cup I’m going to have to rethink a lot of things, depending on whether it goes well or badly.
“Let’s hope it goes well for us.”
Throughout his career, Messi has always had more success at club level than with his country, but he’s enjoying his time with Argentina these days.
“I’ve been happy here for a long time, since before we won the cup [Copa America],” he noted.
“People are showing me that they love me and I’m grateful.
“Everything flows naturally, it’s easier on and off the pitch.”
