Granit Xhaka has tendered an apology to Arsenal supporters for his red card at Liverpool during the Carabao Cup semi-final.

The midfielder was sent off at just 25 minutes of play at Anfield after his careless challenge on Liverpool striker Diogo Jota.

Arsenal managed to hold the host to a goalless draw and the midfielder felt he has to do the needful by apologising to the fans for his moment of madness.

‘Xhaka does what Xhaka does,’ Carragher told Sky. ‘He makes an absolutely ridiculous challenge when Jota has got so much to do.’

‘You asked me if it’s a red card. There’s no doubt it’s a red card. Initially we weren’t sure, did he know he was there? But the way he’s taken him out, the force he’s taken him out, an absolutely ridiculous challenge.’

The Gunners will now continue this season’s campaign without central midfielders as they face Spurs this Sunday, with Xhaka’s suspension adding pressure on Mikel Arteta’s plans.
